An innovative project is a new way of acting to improve the daily lives of elderly people who are vulnerable or isolated. It involves rethinking existing solutions, experimenting with new approaches, and creating initiatives that are more humane, supportive, and sustainable.

Through collaboration between different stakeholders — citizens, associations, institutions, and volunteers — these projects aim to break isolation, strengthen social connections, and promote the well-being of older adults.

Consolidation and Development of the BdBd Model in Wallonia

In a nutshell

The Consolidation and Development of the BdBd Model in Wallonia project, led by Bras dessus Bras dessous, aims to combat loneliness among older adults by developing neighbourhood-based, intergenerational solidarity networks.

The context

Many older people experience loneliness and social isolation on a daily basis, even while living in vibrant neighbourhoods. A lack of social connections can have significant consequences for their well-being, independence, and quality of life.

At the same time, residents within the same neighbourhood often possess resources and a willingness to help one another, yet these strengths remain underutilised.

The project

Bras dessus Bras dessous develops neighbourhood networks that connect isolated older adults with volunteer residents from their local community.

The project includes:

  • creating one-to-one partnerships between an older person and a volunteer neighbour;
  • organising regular visits based on shared interests and affinities;
  • arranging collective and friendly community gatherings;
  • providing support and supervision for volunteers.

These networks are coordinated locally and encourage the development of solidarity initiatives at neighbourhood level.

Impact

The project helps to:

  • reduce loneliness and social isolation among older adults;
  • strengthen social ties within neighbourhoods;
  • support independent living at home;
  • promote civic engagement and intergenerational solidarity.

By rebuilding local connections, the project enables older adults to remain engaged with their surroundings and enjoy a more active social life.
