An innovative project is a new way of acting to improve the daily lives of elderly people who are vulnerable or isolated. It involves rethinking existing solutions, experimenting with new approaches, and creating initiatives that are more humane, supportive, and sustainable.

Through collaboration between different stakeholders — citizens, associations, institutions, and volunteers — these projects aim to break isolation, strengthen social connections, and promote the well-being of older adults.

Welcoming Students in Nursing Homes

In a nutshell

The Welcoming Students in Nursing Homes project, led by 1Toit2Ages, promotes intergenerational co-living by offering students the opportunity to live in nursing homes in exchange for a commitment to engage with residents.

The context

Many older adults living in nursing homes experience social isolation and a lack of daily interaction. At the same time, students face increasing difficulties in finding affordable housing.

These two realities create opportunities for innovative solutions based on solidarity and exchanges between generations.

The project

The project enables students to live in nursing homes that have available accommodation, in exchange for affordable rent and a commitment to participate in the life of the facility.

Students contribute by:

  • building relationships with residents;
  • taking part in activities and social events;
  • contributing to the daily life and atmosphere of the residence.

This co-living arrangement encourages meaningful intergenerational exchanges and provides an additional social presence within the care setting.

Impact

The project helps to:

  • reduce social isolation among older adults;
  • stimulate social interaction and improve residents’ well-being;
  • provide students with affordable housing and a valuable human experience;
  • support care home teams in their daily work.

By fostering intergenerational cohabitation, the project contributes to creating more open, dynamic, and supportive living environments.
