Singing Seniors
In a nutshell
The A Bridge Between Two Worlds programme aims to make music, singing, and opera accessible to vulnerable audiences by offering inclusive and participatory artistic experiences.
The context
Access to culture remains unequal, particularly for people experiencing economic, social, or health-related difficulties. These groups are often disconnected from cultural institutions, despite the well-documented benefits of artistic participation on well-being, self-esteem, and social inclusion.
Creating accessible and adapted cultural opportunities helps foster inclusion and encourages broader participation in cultural life.
The project
Led by La Monnaie / De Munt, the programme offers a range of supervised artistic activities in collaboration with the institution’s professional artists.
Activities include:
- singing workshops organised in various settings (La Monnaie, nursing homes, day-care centres, prisons), led by professional choir conductors and pianists;
- public performances allowing participants to showcase their artistic work;
- adapted concerts (“concertini”) designed for vulnerable audiences;
- free tickets to attend operas, concerts, and recitals.
These activities are based on the active participation of beneficiaries and aim to provide a rewarding and accessible artistic experience.
Impact
The programme contributes to:
- improving access to culture for vulnerable groups;
- strengthening self-esteem and the sense of belonging;
- creating social connections through collective artistic experiences;
- offering opportunities for participation and artistic expression.
By facilitating access to high-quality cultural experiences, the project helps reduce social barriers and promotes inclusion.
